Last week, the tragic news of Alexander McQueen’s death left a very deep hole in many of us. We heart him and his revolutionary designs and art. In commemoration of Alexander McQueen, we have gathered up a few fashion items that are simply exquisite. Fashion Latte Spotlight – Searching with Fun Adjectives

We all know the saying that goes something like “what you put in is what you get”. This saying applies just as much in the Internet world as it does in the real world. So if you want to find the perfect ensemble, sometimes you have to type a perfect description in the search box.

This week, we though we’d put in a spin in our imagination and search for dresses with fun adjectives and see what our database gives us. Sometimes a fun way of doing things can lead you to pretty findings…

Searched for: “Office Dress”

Searched for: “Sun Dress”

Searched for: “Gala Dress”

Searched for “Colorblock Dress”

These are all modern and chic options…and pretty affordable at that. If you’re feeling adventurous, go ahead and try searching for more than just “dress” and see what you get. Remember the more you search, the more we receive your love, the more we give you back! Also, don’t forget you can adjust your search parameters on the right…this would be useful if you are looking at a certain price range per example.

This year will be an exciting one for us and we are here to start off the right way. One of our exciting tools on our website is Looks For Less and we are going to share with you just how fantastic it can be.

and by selecting this $68 dress and using the Looks for Less tool again, I get even more affordable look-a-likes, from which I chose this one which is just as fabulous as the my first choice, but a whole lot cheaper!

Esther was looking up Tech Cocktail Chicago last night, to see if we can make it there for a demo. And guess what she found? A picture of us, from the last time we visited Tech Cocktail, on the Tech Cocktail Events page!!! Yay!!! Much happiness.

What are we working on?

For the last couple of weeks we have been working on adding shoes and handbags to our site. We have about 60,000 shoes and 10,000 handbags indexed in addition to 12,000 dresses. We implemented a mix and match functionality. Users can select dresses and we produce color matches with handbags and shoes. While Bernard and I worked on the image matching parts, Esther set up the site to make the idea of mix and match work. As resident fashion guru she did pretty much most of the text analysis on the shoes and handbags. The end product is pretty cool and we are preping it for the demo on the 3rd of September. Users right now can create nifty outfits and buy them with a click of a button. We’ll add cooler sharing functionalities once the demo is done.

The pitch has been keeping us really busy. Working out the business model and exactly how we are going to make money has been extremely interesting. We spent a significant amount of time arguing revenues and looking up Alexa for our competitors numbers.

Grown up words were thrown about. It made me a little queasy. Had to go back and kick up some GTA IV to bring myself back to being an overgrown kid.

New Logo

We worked with the Logo Company for a new logo for Fashion Latte. Cisco from Tickergram had done a quick mock up for us. While we loved it we wanted to see if we could do better.

Here’s the initial draft we liked:

While this was good we had a week of iterations on color and logo placements and ended up with this:

We are happy and this will be our official logo.

Long Weekend: Diplomacy

While we spent most of long weekend either working on the pitch or looking up material for our classes (yes! we still go to school), I decided to take a break from it all to play DIPLOMACY with a few friends. If you haven’t checked it out you should. HIGH NERD RATING. Probably lower than Dungeons and Dragons, but pretty much there. Essentially, it is a board game in which players take up roles as one of the major European Powers at the beginning of the 20th century. What follows is four hours of plotting and scheming where each one tries to outwit the others in taking away land and resources using their armies and navy. I ended up with Turkey. Great country and excellent people, but sucky team to pick in Diplomacy. The fact that I have a good friend who is Turkish made me want to win even more. In any case, being the newbie I was magnificently out manouvered by a close friend. I ended up attacking Russia too much, which I realized is futile even if you are playing a board game. Several back stabbing sessions later my friend playing Austria-Hungary emerged victorious. All the negotiating and guessing who is going to betray whom made for an excellent afternoon.

Demo Day: Part One

Amazing scenes before demo day. We stayed up real late working on the presentation and the pitch. It took us several iterations to get everyone synched up. I had the easiest part. I played Esther’s proxy to navigate the site. Esther worked her magic on the site and it looked nothing like what it did a week before demo day. We were pretty confident of doing a good job. All three of us are veteran (:P) of several grad school talks. The only thing that made us nervous was our presentation software. We had issues with it at Flashpoint Academy and it made us look bad. We didn’t take any chances here and saved it in as many formats as possible to ensure there weren’t any “compatibility issues”.

The demo itself went off pretty well. The audience was extremely receptive of the idea and the questions were not anything like what we anticipated. Some of the board members had fun asking us questions on when we would put up lingerie on the site. Bernard looked sharp and did an great job selling the idea.

Thankfully, all the teams the iVentures10 program had good demos. There’s the big demo on the 3rd which everyone is working feverishly towards. Here’s hoping things turn out great.
